LO: To write the introduction to my story

Then I would like you to think about the first paragraph of your own refugee story. This is where you will introduce your characters and the setting they are in.

I have written an example. I introduced the main character through her actions and introduced the setting by describing what was around her. I thought very carefully about my vocabulary choices and used commas for clarity. Try to include an issue that your refugee has to deal with, e.g. In my my example: washing in a stream; her wounded feet from the journey and missing her Dad (I have only hinted at what might have happened to him)

Mina sat by the stream and pushed her hijaab from her brow with the back of her hand. The clean washing lay beside her in the tattered basket. The heat was intense so Mina was grateful for her turn to do the washing today, although it was hard work and rubbing the dirt out of the clothes hurt her hands. In the distance, she could hear the Dohl drums playing, whilst the dust circled around the tents, almost dancing to the tune. Mina spotted the bright green truck, which belonged to the Relief Workers, making it’s way towards the camp. She looked down at her feet. They were much better now – all healed from the treacherous journey. She wished she could say the same for dear Father, she missed him so much.
