Wednesday 17th June

Welcome to Day 3 of diversity week. Today we are going to be learning about some important black people who have achieved incredible things and helped to change our world to make it a fairer and more equal place.

So far this week, we have looked at differences that exist between us including our abilities, talents, gender and hair colour. We are all different and that is to be celebrated! One of the other ways in which we all differ is in the colour of our skin.

You have no doubt seen and heard lots of things on the news recently about equality for black people. This may be a very good opportunity to discuss some of these issues. This short message from CBeebies presenter, Ben, may help: Ben Cajee message about racism

These lovely videos from Sesame Street are excellent starting points for discussion about differences in skin colour : Elmo’s hair and Whoopi’s skin Boring if we were all red!

English

Today we are going to learn all about two very important black people: Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.

First, learn who Rosa Parks was using the BBC Bitesize lesson. Watch the video and try the activities: Rosa Parks

Next, have a look at the Martin Luther King video and activities: Dr Martin Luther King

Using one of the templates, create a fact file about either Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King.  Rosa Parks writing frame Martin Luther King writing frame

Another significant black person in history is Mary Seacole. You may wish to have a go at these fun, online activities to learn more about who she was, her work as a nurse and what impact she made in improving society: Mary Seacole online activities

Maths

Have a look at the cards featuring different important black people. Have a chat about who these people are. Do you recognise any of them? Significant black people fact cards 1 Significant black people fact cards 2 Significant black people fact cards 3

Enjoy listening to this song all about the different months of the year, and keep listening until you are confident saying the months in order: months and seasons song

On each of the fact cards, it tells you when each person was born. Can you find this information? Can you order the cards, depending on the month that each person was born? You may have noticed that you do not have a person for every month of the year! Which months are missing?

Can you group the cards depending on what season each person was born in? You may want to listen to the song again!

What month and season were you born in, and in what year?

Finally, try ordering the fact cards according to the year that the people on them were born. This is a lot harder so younger children will need a lot of adult help!

If you would like to play some online games to become more confident with months of the year, then try this game: months of the year game

Creative task

Can you make a model or a piece of art depicting a famous black person from history? You may choose to draw a picture of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King or Mary Seacole or any of the significant people from the fact cards!

You could paint a picture of one of them or make a collage. You could also make a model of them. This outline may help:
