A few important reminders for parents and children:
- Be visible (particularly at this time of year) if your coat is dark where a reflective sash, snap band or a jacket. If you can’t be seen you can’t be avoided.
- Use footpaths where available, if you do have to step out onto the road to avoid a badly parked vehicle please be very cautious and use your green cross code.
- Be aware as a pedestrian if you are standing in a group on the pavement you may be causing an obstruction.
- If you do have to walk on the road because there is no footpath you should be walking on the right hand side facing the oncoming traffic Highway code – rules for pedestrians rule 2 which is not the same side as the cars going in the same direction.
- Limit distractions (talking, listening to music via headphones, looking down at a mobile phone). Hearing is a very important sense when being road aware.
Don’t forget even though you are on the pavement, vehicles may still be a danger reversing off or driving on to driveways, or in some cases mounting the kerb to avoid other traffic. - Don’t forget your Green Cross Code – STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN
Walking is good for children’s health and fitness and we support parents who encourage their children to walk as much as possible. Taking your child in the car for short journeys puts more traffic on the road and adds to the problem.
Children can be safer on the streets if we show them how.
