We are really keen to explore the reading life of all the children in school. As part of our work together we are asking all the children to complete a ‘reading river’ at home. A reading river is simply a way for the children to share with us all the different ways and things they read at home. We would love to know about their favourite books, favourite places to read, what they have been reading over the last few weeks/months e.g. texts, Christmas cards, instructions for games and toys, picture books, comics, magazines, match programmes, TV guides, tickets for days out, recipe books, menus etc. This is not just about reading novels but about all the varied ways we read at home as well as in school. Children might like to cut out pictures to show examples of their reading habits, but the river can be completed by simply writing words or drawing pictures.
Class teachers will have spoken to their children about what they are being asked to do, so they should have some idea when you talk to them about this at home! Please come and have a chat with me on the playground at the end of the day if you are not sure what is involved.
