Monday morning 11.5.20

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a lovely extended weekend. Ready for another fantastic week?!

8.45 – 9.00: Practise spellings. Some of you may have done a spelling test at the end of last week. If not, do your test now and then set some new spellings either from the Year 1 or Year 2 (only for very confident children) spelling list or spellings that practise a particular grapheme or alternative spelling. The words from the Mr Thorne videos are ideal if you’re not sure where to start, or any of the words that are in the sorting games on Phonics Play. 9.00 – 9.05: Wake Up Shake Up Hot Potato

9.05 – 10.00: Maths

Watch the video that starts with a short warm-up and then moves onto doubles. We have looked at doubles before, but recapping it by watching the video will be helpful. The video also goes over how to use a number line to solve doubles. Doubles explained

Playing with dominoes and finding those that represent doubles is a fun way of understanding what ‘double’ means if anyone is finding this a tricky concept. If you are happy with doubles, then try the sheet: Lesson-1-Make-doubles-2020

Here is an online number line which may help. You can alter the numbers on this number line and can also print it off. number line

10.00 – 10.15: Break

10.15 – 11.00: English

Watch episode 2 of Jack and the Beanstalk. After watching, recap what has happened so far in the story. How does Jack’s mother feel in this part of the story? Why? How does Jack feel towards the end of episode 2? Why does he feel like this? Use the sheet to write a sentence or two about each picture from episode 2. I would like you to try really hard to use ‘and’ or ‘because’ to make your sentences longer. Jack and the Beanstalk episode 2 sheet Remember to read back your sentences to make sure you have capital letters and full stops! You also need a capital letter for Jack.

11.00 – 11.15: Phonics

Watch Mr Thorne’s video looking at the ‘ur’ phoneme and alternative graphemes for this sound: Mr Thorne er ur ir ear or Say the words that you see as you watch the video. Mr Thorne uses ‘er’ here as the starting phoneme. We normally teach ‘er’ as a shorter sound than ‘ur’ and ‘ir’, although it can of course appear in words such as ‘fern’ and ‘her’ as longer.

Then have a go at this activity, choosing the correct grapheme to match the pictures shown: OPSD_worksheets_Alternative Spellings_SuperC_Hires

If you can access Phonics Play without a problem, then have a go at the alternative spellings activity for ‘ur’, including the phoneme spotter story and the word sorting task. alternatives for ur Phase 5c

11.15 – 11.30: Break

11.30 – 11.40: Mindfulness https://cosmickids.com/category/watch/?video_category=relaxation&changed=video_category

11.40 – 12.25: Geography

Recap the four countries of the UK. Today we are going to focus on the counties that make up England. Using the blank map, can you use an atlas or a map from the internet to find where Shropshire is? Colour it in when you have found it. Is Shropshire big compared to other counties?

How would you describe where Shropshire is? (North, south, east, west, middle etc.)

Then find out what the towns are that are labelled on the Shropshire map. You will need a detailed map of Shropshire to help you with this. When you’ve finished, have a think about where Pontesbury is on the map. Which big town is it near? Feel free to add on what you like to the Shropshire map. For example, you may want to mark on the River Severn or other places that you know. map of Shropshire

Have a super morning everyone. x
