At Pontesbury, we use the Read, Write, Perform approach for our writing. We explore a range of genres and use cross-curricular links to History, Geography and Science to support our reason to write. Pupils will develop their grammar, vocabulary and spelling throughout and discretely from writing lessons.
In our school, we understand that reading is the key pupils reaching their full potential. We use Bug Club Phonics from the point of entry (EYFS) to develop fluent and confident readers and writers. This progresses further up the school to incorporate comprehension based on the John Murray approach to reading. We actively encourage reading for pleasure through visiting our own and the local library; listening to a class story/book daily and hosting author visits.
Reading underpins all we do. It is central to our curriculum.
In KS1, Teachers deliver a daily phonics scheme using Bug Club Phonics. This runs from phase 1 to phase 6. Home reading books are linked to the appropriate phase for each child, giving them independent access.
