Friday morning 15.5.20

Can you believe it’s Friday already?! I hope you’ve all had a super week. Here are our morning activities:

8.45 – 9.00: Practise spellings

9.00 – 9.05: Wake Up Shake Up Hot Potato

9.05 – 10.00: Maths

Today’s problem solving task is one where you can apply your skills of being able to add more than two numbers together at one time, and find different possibilities for answers. Writing each of the numbers on a piece of paper will help. Here is your problem to solve:

It would be a good idea to use equipment again (100 square, number line, counters or jottings) and to write out each number sentence as you go.

I’m also putting another problem on here for anyone who achieves the first one very quickly; I know that there are lots of mental maths whizz kids in Room 5! Blue group had a go at this following one a few months ago, but it was too difficult at the time and proved to be confusing! Sorry, I can’t attach it as a document as it is part of a very long file.

10.00 – 10.15: Break

10.15 – 11.00: English

Today we are going to finish hearing/watching the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ by watching a different version of the whole story. Watch the video and see what happens next. Then have a think about how this version differs from the other one we have been using with the episodes. Think about the appearance of the characters and the setting of Jack’s house. Is there as much detail in this version? British Council Jack and the Beanstalk

You may also want to watch the final episode from the BBC site so that you can compare the giant and the ending: Final episode BBC Teach version.

How did the story finish and how did the characters feel at the end of the story? Why did they feel like this? What words were used to finish the story? Let’s recap the whole story now we know it all. You can also consider other fancy things that the giant had in his castle: short-stories-jack-and-the-beanstalk-worksheet

Then, draw a picture of Jack and his house now that he and Ma are rich. Would there still be those stinky things in the fridge? Would his clothes still have holes in them?

11.00 – 11.15: Phonics

Use this time to do your spelling test and to set new spellings from either the key word list or using phonics activities that you’ve been doing recently in our phonics sessions. Year 1 and 2 spelling list Look Say Cover spellings

You may want to do a quick assessment of what graphemes your child is secure with using this sound mat. Go through each grapheme, asking your child to read the word that is underneath independently. Phase 3 and 5 word check

11.15 – 11.30: Break

11.30 – 11.40: Mindfulness Friendly Wishes

11.40 – 12.25: RE

Last time, we looked at different creation stories and compared them to the Christian story in the Old Testament. Today we are going to find out what Sikhs believe about how the world was created. It was very tricky finding resources for this that are suitable for homeschooling, so I apologise for the KS2 PowerPoint! Have a look at each picture and discuss what each one is showing. Then try to pull out the main beliefs of Sikhism regarding creation and discuss how it differs from what Christians believe – slide 2 will help you with this. The basic difference between what Sikhs believe and what Christians believe is that in the Sikh story there is no order, sequence of events or reference to time. Discussing similarities may be easier! t2-re-589-sikh-creation-stories-powerpoint-english_ver_2

Thank you all for continuing to work so hard. x
