English W/B 11th January

This week we are going to start to look at a story called The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.  This is a classic story written over 50 years ago.  This version was published in 2019 and features new and stunning illustrations by Chris Mould.

I will also upload the full week’s English work as you may wish to print one document today that will explain the whole week.   I will still post the English work each day and any videos or links needed.

Text Version Chapter 1

Have a think about these questions and discuss them with an adult if possible.

What do the words ‘boiling’ and ‘booming’ suggest about the sea?

Which word tells the reader the Iron Man is on the edge of the cliff.

Which word in the text tells us the Iron Man’s body parts are spread over a large area.

Why did the gulls think the Iron Man’s hand was a crab?

Why do you think the Iron Man walked into the sea?

Can you find where the author uses a simile to describe the Iron Man’s size?

Meet Chris Mould the illustrator of our beautiful book and have a go at drawing your own Iron Man  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FtNE2Fm-3Y&feature=youtu.be

I would now like you to label your drawing with descriptive phrases, adjectives and similes. See the example below.  These are just ideas you will use to write a description tomorrow so they don’t necessarily need to be full sentences yet.

Try to be adventurous with your language so instead of using big, could you use enormous, vast, colossal, immense?  Maybe choose a couple of your words to improve at the end with a thesaurus.

I look forward to seeing your pictures.
