Express yourself with scissors

One Saturday last September I took part in an online art class called ‘Painting with scissors’ a glimpse into Henri Matisse’s playful approach to art. I thoroughly enjoyed expressing myself with some coloured paper and a pair of scissors. The class saw its participants copying many of Matisse’s masterpieces however, my favourite activity was expressing myself cutting my own shape out to music.

For some background here is Matisse’s story

I’m sure this is something many of you would enjoy. Why don’t you have a go!
There are lots of YouTube videos if you search painting or drawing with scissors.

What you will need:

  • a variety of coloured paper and a bigger piece for building your collage
  • scissors
  • glue
  • your imagination!

Some of the tutorials suggest you use a pencil or marker pen and draw your shapes out first, you can do this if you want I myself prefer to just cut out the shapes that came into my head and really express myself. The great thing about this type of art is there is no right or wrong you can use everything you cut including what you might think of as the off cuts – the bits left over from the object you have cut out. If your cutting isn’t perfect that is fine too.

When you have finished cutting shapes from different coloured papers (these can be ready made coloured sheets or you could paint your own just like Matisse) you can stick them onto a bigger pieces of paper or card and make a collage.

I’d love to see your work when you’ve finished – please do take pictures and click here to send them to me. Why not start with the plain coloured paper like Henri Matisse but if you feel like it you could experiment with other paper you might have at home like wallpaper, wrapping paper, old magazines or newspapers (just check its ok with the grown ups first!)

For anyone (including parents) who is interested this is the class I took. There is a cost to it but it is ‘pay what you can afford’ so should be accessible to all.

Monday 1.2.21

Good morning everyone.  I hope you are all well rested and ready for a bit more home learning.

For our maths today we are returning to multiplication.  We are going to have a quick reminder about how we use arrays.

Have a look at the PowerPoint, you will need to have a pencil and paper ready to go.

Please can you practise your spellings.  In class, sometimes we practise our spellings  by writing them BIG, small and  without looking at all.  You could try this at home.

Have a little brain break…

For your English today, you are continuing with your Rainforest Creature Report.  On Friday you started writing your report.  Today you are going to have another 20  minutes or so to continue writing.  Please can you take lots of care with your presentation.  You need to show that you can use these features of a report when you are writing yours.

  • A bright colourful title
  • Sub-headings to tell the reader what each paragraph is about
  • A description of your animal (this is the introduction)
  • A paragraph about what your animal eats – its prey
  • A paragraph about what eats your animal- its predators
  • A paragraph about where your creature lives – its habitat
  • Pictures of your creature with labels
  • A fact box with your 3 facts in it
  • Lots of lovely, bright decoration to make the reader want to read it.

Write for about 20 minutes.  Then put it all in a safe place for Tuesday, when we will continue with it.  Remember to make it bright, colourful and inviting to the reader.

If you would like to do some handwriting, here is the paper and a short video to show you the joins to practise.

This afternoon I thought we would go on a little school visit.  I have found a lovely website which is a virtual rainforest tour.  Have a little look at the amazing creatures.  I hope you have a fantastic time.  The video has got some lovely videos and great information. Obviously, the sloth video is my favourite!  it’s filmed in double time so you can actually see them moving.

Friday 29th January

Hello everyone!  We have managed to make it through another busy week.  I hope you are all well.

I have sent all parents an email with your children’s email address and password on.  Next week we will have a meet up to do a bit of show and tell.  It will be so lovely to see everyone.  Please don’t worry, if you just want to show up and wave, that’s absolutely fine, nobody has to speak.  It will just be nice to see each other.  I will let you know the details here, on a web post, and then send out invitations to your children’s emails.  Mrs Andrew’s video will show you how to set up their emails, if your are unsure.

We will begin with our Friday with a maths warm up.

To start with, I’d like you to practise your number bonds for 10 or 20. Then, if you are feeling brave, 100.

Hit The Button

In our maths lesson,  we are continuing to find change.  Have a look at the PowerPoint.

Friday PowerPoint

Today, I’d like you to work out if the change you have been given is correct.

Here are the sheets.  As usual, sheet 4 is the most tricky.

You will definitely need a brain break now!

For our English today, we are going to begin writing our reports.

If we were at school, I would give you lots of cut up text boxes both lined and plain.  You could then draw pictures or write the paragraphs in them and arrange them as you wanted to on a larger piece of paper.  You can make them bright and colourful with pictures and decorations.

Here are some text boxes and  picture/diagram boxes for you to cut up and use if you wish.

Rainforest Report text boxes

Today we are going to begin writing our reports.  You will need all your notes.  Read through your notes and as you are writing them, turn them into whole sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Your report will need to show off these features:

  • A bright colourful title
  • Sub-headings to tell the reader what each paragraph is about
  • A description of your animal (this is the introduction)
  • A paragraph about what your animal eats – its prey
  • A paragraph about what eats your animal- its predators
  • A paragraph about where your creature lives – its habitat
  • Pictures of your creature with labels
  • A fact box with your 3 facts in it
  • Lots of lovely, bright decoration to make the reader want to read it.

Write for about 20 minutes.  Then put it all in a safe place for Monday, when we will continue with it.

We will aim to finish our reports on Wednesday. So we will do 20 minutes today, another 20 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and finish it off on Wednesday.

Use all your notes to help you, don’t try and write it from memory.  This is a final copy of your report so use your best handwriting and take lots of pride in your work.

I hope this makes sense, if not, please email me and let me know!!

You definitely need another brain break after this!!!

On Friday afternoon we have Computing.

This week we are continuing with programming.

Log on to the ilearn2 website. Here is the link.

https://www.ilearn2.co.uk/signin.html/

Then type in code Y654

Today you are working on activity 4.  Watch the video and then practise the skills.  You are always so much better at this than me!

For our RE today I’d like you to have look at the story of Mosses and the 10 Commandments.

The 10 Commandments

I’d like you to read/share the story and think about what rules we have and why.  They might be home rules, school rules, rules we are all sticking to, to keep us safe and well.  Have a chat about why rules are so important. What might happen if we had not rules?

I hope you have a lovely weekend, thank you for all your hard work yet again this week.

Love from Mrs Pope

Thursday 28th January

Good morning everyone.  I hope you are all well and ready for some more learning.

Lets wake our brains up.

Super Movers

I thought you might like this and it will be pretty useful for your maths today!  It makes my eyes go funny but I hope you enjoy it.

This morning we are going to continue with money.  Today we are going to look at giving change.  Here is the PowerPoint.  Work through this.  You will need a pencil and paper for some calculating.  I have also put a numberline for you to use to support you if needed.  When you have worked through the PowerPoint, there is a link to take you to a game.  I would like you to play this game for your maths today.

Please can you practise your spellings.  If you want to make it more exciting, you could work out their values on this scrabble sheet.  What is your Highest spelling word score?

Perhaps you need a bit of a brain break?

This is one of our favourite bedtime stories in my house!

So far this week, you have written a description of your rainforest creature and you did some amazing research yesterday all about what your creature eats, and what eats your creature.  I hope you found the words carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, nocturnal, diurnal, prey, predator useful.  Keep your fantastic notes safe. You will need them when we write our report.

Today I would like you to do a little more research.  This is our last day of research before we begin writing.  I would like you to find out about where your animal likes to live.  It’s habitat.  We know it is a rainforest creature, but where in the rainforest does it live and hunt.

  • Does it live in the canopy or on the forest floor.
  •  Does it have a den or a nest or a burrow?
  • How does it move around, does it walk, fly or slide?
  • Does it have a territory that it protects or does it travel wherever it wishes?

When you have found out some facts about your creatures habitat, I would like you to find out 3 fun facts that you think other people would like to know about your creature.

Please can you find 5-10 minutes to read your reading book.  If you are running low on books at home to read and share, or just fancy a different read, have a look on this website.  An adult will have to create a log in – but it is free and they have loads of free E Books.

Oxford Owl

This afternoon is our PE afternoon. Go for a walk, a bike ride, make up a dance to your favourite song, have lots of fun doing something active you enjoy.

If you fancy a bit of yoga, here is a link for you.

Have a lovely day, let me know how you are getting on,

Love from Mrs Pope

Maths 28.01.21

Maths:

Today. I would like you to have some fun with measuring yourselves.

You could choose to investigate ‘Can the longest legs jump the furthest?’

  • Measure the leg lengths (outside leg -waist to heel) of the people involved ( you could involve a family member or friend who doesn’t live with you via phone or email)
  • Measure the distances your group can jump (jumping two feet together)

You could record your results in a table like this or draw your own Table

Who had the longest legs? Who jumped the furthest? What do you results show?

Here is a simple investigation if you are working on your own: measures-investigation

Finally, here is a game to finish off your fun. Length spinner game

This is Rob Biddulph’s latest video which was posted just a couple of days ago. In the first few minutes of the video, he tells you about a competition you can enter. It’s very exciting, have a listen…then have a go at drawing the race suit.

Some of you are still finishing your collages. Please try and finish those. I would love to see them. Thank you to all those who have sent them in.

Wednesday 27th January

English:

LO: To think about purpose, clarity, style and reliability.

We are going to explore 3 articles today and make notes on the four elements in the Learning Objective. There is a lesson powerpoint here:Wednesday English

Reading comprehension:

As you have done lots of reading today, I would like you to follow the link and choose one picture you would like to study. There are just a few questions to answer about each one. Once upon a Picture

Spellings:

Play spelling tennis with someone at home. If you were spelling ‘most’, one of you would say M, then the other person would say O, then back to person one to say S, etc Hide your spelling words when you are playing so that you really try hard to visualise the word in your mind.

Tuesday 26th January

Good morning everyone, I hope you managed to find plenty of time to play in the snow yesterday.  We had great fun at home making a snow monster over the weekend.

Hopefully you are all warm and toasty and ready to go today.  Let’s warm our brains up.

Super Movers Money

Today we are continuing with our work on money.  Have a little look at this PowerPoint.  You may want to have a pencil and paper at the ready as you are going to need to do some investigating.

Tuesday PowerPoint

For our English work today we are going to continue writing reports.  We will be using the same features that we looked at last week.

  • Title
  • Introduction
  • Subheadings
  • Diagram
  • Labels
  • Fact box

This week we are going to be taking notes.  You will need to keep your notes safe all week so that we will be able to use them to write our final report.  We do this in school all the time, only we keep our work in our English book.  We practise skills and then use them when we are confident .

Today we are going to choose a rainforest creature, pick your favourite.  I am going to choose the sloth because they are so cool, calm and collected and they always look like they are smiling!

But there are literally thousands you could choose from.  I would like you to choose your creature, Then find a picture of it, either using books or on the internet.  Make sure your write ‘for kids’ when you are searching the internet.  Have your picture in front of you if you can.  Have a look at the PowerPoint below and write your description of your animal.  Remember, these are notes, you will need them for your final report later in the week.

For our art this afternoon we are returning to texture.  Texture is how something feels.  Artists have to show texture in their art work.

Make sure you have a sharp pencil and have a go at copying some of these textures.

Last week in our PSHE lesson we thought about our responsibilities and how your responsibilities are different to an adults. For your PSHE today I would like you to think about jobs and careers.  Can you find out what the adults in your house do as a job.  How many jobs can you think of, you could time yourself for 2 minutes, how many can you come up with?

What kinds of jobs interest you?  Have a chat with someone at home about the types of job you are interested in doing and why.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Let me know if you need anything and how you get on.
