Spellings

I will give out the spellings on a Friday, to be tested the following Friday.

These are your spellings for the week. I have included words with hyphens, two words from our history this week and a couple from the year 5/6 wordlist. (Red group – Year 3/4 wordlist) Please find out what all your spelling words mean if you are unsure. You can practise them using rainbow writing today. spellings 08 01

Hyphens are sometimes used to join a prefix to a root word, especially if the prefix ends in a vowel and the root word also begins with one

E.g. co-operate       re-apply

Hyphens are also sometimes used to make compound words. Most of these are adjectives, like this:

E.g. sugar-free      well-known     open-mouthed

Home learning for 7.1.21

Hi everyone,

Hopefully you have got on well with home schooling today. Here are the activities for tomorrow. Please don’t worry about adapting the ideas given or making your own sheets. It is also fine to do things practically if printing is tricky.

Please continue to practise your spellings. It will also be beneficial to go through your sounds. You could use the flashcards on Phonics Play (username: pps1; password: apple) for this: flashcards phonics

Wake Up, Shake Up: Hey Monkey

Maths: Recap the coins that we looked at yesterday using real life examples (1p, 2p, 5p and 10p. Introduce the 20p. What colour is it? How many sides does it have? Go back over how many 1p coins are the same as a 2p piece, a 5p piece and a 10p piece. How many 1p coins are the same as a 20p coin?  How about the number of 2p coins that are the same as a 10p? How many 2p coins would be the same as a 20p?

Yellows: Use 1p and 2p coins to pay for things in a pretend shop, using items in your house. If you are feeling confident, try just using 2p coins to pay for things costing 8p, 10p or 12p.

Greens: Try the first two sheets on this file: how-much-do-the-ice-creams-cost-activity-sheets Feel free to try the third sheet if confident! Remember to look carefully at the value of each coin as you add them!

Blues: Have a go at sheets 3 and 4 on this file. When you are filling the jars with your own choices, see if you can use coins other than 1ps. What combinations of coins can you use to make this amount? how-much-money-is-in-my-jar-british-money-differentiated-activity-sheets

English: Use Julia Donaldson’s website to see if you can find answers to the questions below. https://www.juliadonaldson.co.uk/

Can you name 5 books written by Julia Donaldson that you had never heard of before?

Does Julia Donaldson just write picture books or does she write books for older children?

Where did she live when she was younger?

Is Axel Scheffler always the illustrator for Julia Donaldson?

What is the name of Julia Donaldson’s brand new book?

Does Julia Donaldson only write story books? What other sorts of books does she write?

Reading Skills

Read or watch ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. Does this story have all the ingredients of a typical Julia Donaldson book? (Does it rhyme? Does it have animals in it? Is there some fantasy?) Can you think of any other Julia Donaldson books that have heroes in them?

Wednesday 6th January 2021

Good morning my lovelies,

Well, I have to say this is not how I wanted to begin the new year and I’m sure it’s not how you wanted to either. I’m sure it wont be too long before I see all you all again.

Before you begin your maths today, you may want to print out a 100 square to help you when you are counting.  Once you have printed it out, you can keep it in a safe place for another day.

100 square

Here is today’s PowerPoint.  Please bear with me as we all get used to this way of working again.  As you play the PowerPoint, you will hear me asking you questions. As I recorded it, I imagined all your fabulous faces in front of me so I didn’t feel too silly.

Wednesday Maths PP

Wednesday counting in 3 cards

If you are feeling super confident, have a go at ‘Hit the Button’.  We have played this before in school. Today choose the 3 x table.

English:

Have a read and a listen to this PowerPoint.  Today I thought it would be nice to write a letter to someone. You could say thank you for some thoughtful presents or just tell them what you have been doing and how much you miss them.  I know you will remember a capital letter to begin each sentence and a full stop to end them.  If you listen very carefully, you can probably hear me nagging!!!

After lunch, we usually do our reading lesson. Here is a comprehension about penguins for you to have a look at, choose the one that you feel most confident with.

On Wednesdays we would be having Mr Farlow for art, I know he will be very keen to work with you as soon as we are all back together again.  This term our topic for art is linked to our science topic of ‘Animals and their Habitats’.

This week, I would like you to practise some sketching. I know some of you are amazing artists and will enjoy this.  You can sketch your favourite animal from a book or your pet in real life.  Whichever you wish to have a go at. Remember, art is never perfect because it’s not a photograph so don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t go to plan.

Keep me posted on how you are getting on.  If you have time, you can email me and show me some of your work or just let me know how you are getting on. It will be lovely to hear from you.

Miss you all,

Love from Mrs Pope x

In RE today we are looking at belonging.  Can you think about what groups you belong to.  Make a list.  Then can you think about how it feels to belong to a group.  How does belonging make us feel supported and cared for.   We are going to make a poster in school using plenty of bright colours to write down the emotions we feel when we are part of a caring group.

Please can you read your reading book.

I hope you are having a lovely day and you have a good weekend.

In our English work, we are writing descriptions of Tudor London. Yesterday we thought about what was above us, below us, near us and in the distance.  We are going to use these fronted adverbials to help us start sentences.  Watch the video below again.  Think about what you can see, hear, touch and smell.  Think about what is above you, below you, next to you and what you can see in the distance.

Can you write a description of London, using plenty of adjectives and expanded noun phrases ( adjective, adjective noun eg dark, damp houses or  brown, wooden building)

Our reading comprehension for today is ‘Amazing Antarctic Animals’

Complete the one that is best suited to you.

Amazing Antarctic animals.

This afternoon, as it Bonfire night, we are looking at the history of today and why we celebrate it.

Have a lovely day,

The Great Fire of London.

We have all been really busy this week finding out what Tudor London looked like.  We started by watching this video. We all loved spotting lots of differences.

We have been thinking of adjectives to describe the city and using them to make our work more interesting to read.

We also had a little look at this game, so I thought I’d put it on the website for you to have a go at.

I hope you enjoy looking at these.

Maths

To day we started to learn our 3x table.

We practised counting through in our multiples of 3.  We placed all the multiples of 3 on a counting stick and then gradually removed multiples until we could remember them all.

We played this game with a partner.
