As you will be aware, some children bring in treats (be it sweets or a cake) to share with their friends on their birthday. We feel it is a thoughtful act of generosity to want to give (as well as receive) on their special day. Whilst we are not encouraging children to bring in treats, we do recognise the joy it can bring them in sharing with others. Please do not feel under any obligation, it is personal preference, there is no expectation whatsoever.
These treats are always distributed (usually by the child but in some cases the staff assist because cakes need cutting or to prevent squabbles) at the end of the school day so that it is up to the parent/carer when or if the child can consume the gift, and indeed if it is suitable to their dietary needs. We do ask that the treat is limited to one item per child, not only for ease of distribution but also because there can be multiple birthdays. It is always optional, no child has to take any offered treat, it is perfectly acceptable to say ‘no, thank you’.
From a ‘Healthy School’ point of view you may wish to consider alternatives to the sugary treats.
