Friday 29th January

Hello everyone!  We have managed to make it through another busy week.  I hope you are all well.

I have sent all parents an email with your children’s email address and password on.  Next week we will have a meet up to do a bit of show and tell.  It will be so lovely to see everyone.  Please don’t worry, if you just want to show up and wave, that’s absolutely fine, nobody has to speak.  It will just be nice to see each other.  I will let you know the details here, on a web post, and then send out invitations to your children’s emails.  Mrs Andrew’s video will show you how to set up their emails, if your are unsure.

We will begin with our Friday with a maths warm up.

To start with, I’d like you to practise your number bonds for 10 or 20. Then, if you are feeling brave, 100.

Hit The Button

In our maths lesson,  we are continuing to find change.  Have a look at the PowerPoint.

Friday PowerPoint

Today, I’d like you to work out if the change you have been given is correct.

Here are the sheets.  As usual, sheet 4 is the most tricky.

Sheet 1

Sheet 2

Sheet 4

Please can you take your Spelling Test.  Keep me posted on how you get on.

Here are your new spellings for next week:

You will definitely need a brain break now!

For our English today, we are going to begin writing our reports.

If we were at school, I would give you lots of cut up text boxes both lined and plain.  You could then draw pictures or write the paragraphs in them and arrange them as you wanted to on a larger piece of paper.  You can make them bright and colourful with pictures and decorations.

Here are some text boxes and  picture/diagram boxes for you to cut up and use if you wish.

Rainforest Report text boxes

Today we are going to begin writing our reports.  You will need all your notes.  Read through your notes and as you are writing them, turn them into whole sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Your report will need to show off these features:

  • A bright colourful title
  • Sub-headings to tell the reader what each paragraph is about
  • A description of your animal (this is the introduction)
  • A paragraph about what your animal eats – its prey
  • A paragraph about what eats your animal- its predators
  • A paragraph about where your creature lives – its habitat
  • Pictures of your creature with labels
  • A fact box with your 3 facts in it
  • Lots of lovely, bright decoration to make the reader want to read it.

Write for about 20 minutes.  Then put it all in a safe place for Monday, when we will continue with it.

We will aim to finish our reports on Wednesday. So we will do 20 minutes today, another 20 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and finish it off on Wednesday.

Use all your notes to help you, don’t try and write it from memory.  This is a final copy of your report so use your best handwriting and take lots of pride in your work.

I hope this makes sense, if not, please email me and let me know!!

You definitely need another brain break after this!!!

On Friday afternoon we have Computing.

This week we are continuing with programming.

Log on to the ilearn2 website. Here is the link.

https://www.ilearn2.co.uk/signin.html/

Then type in code Y654

Today you are working on activity 4.  Watch the video and then practise the skills.  You are always so much better at this than me!

For our RE today I’d like you to have look at the story of Mosses and the 10 Commandments.

The 10 Commandments

I’d like you to read/share the story and think about what rules we have and why.  They might be home rules, school rules, rules we are all sticking to, to keep us safe and well.  Have a chat about why rules are so important. What might happen if we had not rules?

I hope you have a lovely weekend, thank you for all your hard work yet again this week.

Love from Mrs Pope

Thursday 28th January

Good morning everyone.  I hope you are all well and ready for some more learning.

Lets wake our brains up.

Super Movers

I thought you might like this and it will be pretty useful for your maths today!  It makes my eyes go funny but I hope you enjoy it.

This morning we are going to continue with money.  Today we are going to look at giving change.  Here is the PowerPoint.  Work through this.  You will need a pencil and paper for some calculating.  I have also put a numberline for you to use to support you if needed.  When you have worked through the PowerPoint, there is a link to take you to a game.  I would like you to play this game for your maths today.

Thursday PowerPoint

Perhaps you need a bit of a brain break?

This is one of our favourite bedtime stories in my house!

So far this week, you have written a description of your rainforest creature and you did some amazing research yesterday all about what your creature eats, and what eats your creature.  I hope you found the words carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, nocturnal, diurnal, prey, predator useful.  Keep your fantastic notes safe. You will need them when we write our report.

Today I would like you to do a little more research.  This is our last day of research before we begin writing.  I would like you to find out about where your animal likes to live.  It’s habitat.  We know it is a rainforest creature, but where in the rainforest does it live and hunt.

  • Does it live in the canopy or on the forest floor.
  •  Does it have a den or a nest or a burrow?
  • How does it move around, does it walk, fly or slide?
  • Does it have a territory that it protects or does it travel wherever it wishes?

When you have found out some facts about your creatures habitat, I would like you to find out 3 fun facts that you think other people would like to know about your creature.

Please can you find 5-10 minutes to read your reading book.  If you are running low on books at home to read and share, or just fancy a different read, have a look on this website.  An adult will have to create a log in – but it is free and they have loads of free E Books.

Oxford Owl

This afternoon is our PE afternoon. Go for a walk, a bike ride, make up a dance to your favourite song, have lots of fun doing something active you enjoy.

If you fancy a bit of yoga, here is a link for you.

Have a lovely day, let me know how you are getting on,

Have a little Brain Break!

In our English today, we are continuing to make notes about our chosen rainforest creatures.  Yesterday you wrote a description of your creature using some well chosen adjectives.  Today we are going to continue to take notes.

Today we are going to find out about what your creature eats and what may eat your creature.

You can use books or the internet but please make sure you put ‘for kids’  when you do your search so that you get the right type of information.

Think about these questions when you are doing your research:

  • Is your creature a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore?
  • What is it’s prey – what does it eat?
  • What are its predators -eats it?
  • When does it hunt – during the day, if so it is diurnal or at night – making it nocturnal?
  • what parts of the rainforest does your creature hunt in? – forest floor, understory, canopy, emergent layer.
  • Does it have a special way of catching its prey – builds a web, poisons it with venom.
  • How often does it eat – 20 hours a day, once every 2 weeks?
  • How much does it eat?

The words I have written in bold are technical vocabulary that you may want to use.

You can write your notes as bullet points or as a spider diagram.  Please make sure you keep them safe because you will need them when we write our report.  Here is a template for your notes if you would like one but you can write your reports in anyway you wish.

Tuesday 26th January

Good morning everyone, I hope you managed to find plenty of time to play in the snow yesterday.  We had great fun at home making a snow monster over the weekend.

Hopefully you are all warm and toasty and ready to go today.  Let’s warm our brains up.

Super Movers Money

Today we are continuing with our work on money.  Have a little look at this PowerPoint.  You may want to have a pencil and paper at the ready as you are going to need to do some investigating.

Tuesday PowerPoint

For our English work today we are going to continue writing reports.  We will be using the same features that we looked at last week.

  • Title
  • Introduction
  • Subheadings
  • Diagram
  • Labels
  • Fact box

This week we are going to be taking notes.  You will need to keep your notes safe all week so that we will be able to use them to write our final report.  We do this in school all the time, only we keep our work in our English book.  We practise skills and then use them when we are confident .

Today we are going to choose a rainforest creature, pick your favourite.  I am going to choose the sloth because they are so cool, calm and collected and they always look like they are smiling!

But there are literally thousands you could choose from.  I would like you to choose your creature, Then find a picture of it, either using books or on the internet.  Make sure your write ‘for kids’ when you are searching the internet.  Have your picture in front of you if you can.  Have a look at the PowerPoint below and write your description of your animal.  Remember, these are notes, you will need them for your final report later in the week.

Last week in our PSHE lesson we thought about our responsibilities and how your responsibilities are different to an adults. For your PSHE today I would like you to think about jobs and careers.  Can you find out what the adults in your house do as a job.  How many jobs can you think of, you could time yourself for 2 minutes, how many can you come up with?

What kinds of jobs interest you?  Have a chat with someone at home about the types of job you are interested in doing and why.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Let me know if you need anything and how you get on.

Monday 25th January

Good morning everyone and welcome to brand new week of learning. I hope you all had a super weekend and are ready to go!

This week, in our maths work we will be learning all about coins used in the UK.  This is a great excuse for you to ask someone at home for some money…just the coins…and you will have to give them back!

Have a little look at his PowerPoint.  There is a game to play included on the PowerPoint.  Please choose the ‘Ordering’ game if you are confident naming coins.  If you aren’t sure what all the coins look like, choose the sorting game first.

You will need activity code Y654. We are now on activity 3 so watch the short video and have a go.  Some of you are absolutely amazing at coding.

For our RE today I would like you to think about who influences you. This is quite a big idea. Someone who influences people can change their ideas.  Have a read about Greta Thunberg, she has influenced millions of people and the governments of countries about climate change.

Greta Thunberg

Have a think and talk to someone at home about the people who influence you.  How do they influence you?  Do people always have a good influence on you? How could you influence others?

Have a lovely weekend.

Make sure you get plenty of rest and have plenty of fun.

Thursday 21st January

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all ok and bright and ready to learn today. Lets start the day with a little maths warm up.

10 times table Super Movers

For maths today, we are continuing with 3D shapes.  Today we are sorting them into a Venn diagram.

A Venn diagram looks like this.

Have a look at the PowerPoint and it will explain all…I hope!

PowerPoint for Thursday

Here is the sheet that goes with the PowerPoint.

Venn diagram

We are going to write a report about rainforests.  We have spent all week finding out some amazing facts about them.  So for your first challenge today, I would like you to list all the facts you know about rainforests.  Think about:

  • Where they are found?
  • What the weather is like?
  • What are the layers and what is it like in each of the layers?
  • What animals and insects live there?
  • What food grows there?
  • why they are so important?

You could do this as a list with bullet points or you could do this as a spider diagram, whichever why suits you.

Now I’d like you to think about what you don’t know.  Can you write down 3 questions  Here are mine.  Yours may be different but you can share mine if you like.

  • How much rain falls in the rainforest?
  • Which animals are endangered?
  • What is deforestation?

Using books or a ‘safe search’ on the internet (where you write ‘for kids‘ so you get the right type of information)  Find out the answers to your questions and write them down.  I have included a sheet for this but only use it if you want to, you certainly don’t need to print it out.

Tomorrow we are going to write our report using these notes.

We enjoyed listening to these rainforest sounds as we worked in school yesterday, you may too.

Have a little brain break! You deserve it.

Maddie Space and You- Rockets

Please can you practise your spellings ready for tomorrow’s test.

This afternoon is our PE afternoon so here is a video for you to have a go at if it is too rainy or your grown ups are too busy to take you outside for a walk or a bike ride at the moment.

I hope you have a lovely day, let me know how you get on.

Wednesday 20th January

Good morning, happy Wednesday!

I hope you are all well and you had a great day yesterday.  How did your art go? Drawing a rainforest picture without taking your pencil off the paper was pretty tricky.  I’m very glad you didn’t get to see my efforts.

We will begin with our maths.  Here is your PowerPoint for today.

Tuesday 19th January

Good morning everyone, I hope you enjoyed your work yesterday.

For your maths today you will need a copy of the 3D shape mat that you used yesterday.

3D shape mat  Here is it again, just in case.

You will also need your 3D shapes that you found or made yesterday.

The first thing I would like you to do is warm up your Maths brains.  Do you remember the 3 words I wanted you to know yesterday?

Vertices, face, edge.

They are really important words when we are talking about 3D shapes.  Pick up one of your shapes, can you count the number of faces it has?  The number of vertices? the number of edges?

Which of your shapes have the most vertices? Which has the fewest?

Have a look at this PowerPoint.  In it you will need to count faces, vertices and edges and compare them.

Here is the PowerPoint.

3D shape Tuesday

For you maths today, Id like you to cut out these cards.  You will need to match the picture to the clue.  Remember to keep your shapes nearby so that you can count vertices, edges and faces.

Matching cards

Here is a little tour of a rainforest.  Use the hand or the arrows to move the camera around the jungle, explore what is beneath your feet and above your head.

For your English today we are returning to the rainforest.  you may want to print the sheet out first if you can.  Page 1 is the report, page 2 is the grid of report features for you to cut up and use.

Rainforest report

Here is your PowerPoint. Today we are finding the features of a report.  A feature is something that a writer uses in that type of writing – so a title or fact boxes.  It is important we know what the features of a report are so that we can use them when we write our own reports.  These are like our success criteria.

Tuesday PowerPoint

Please can you practise your spellings.  Here is some handwriting paper for you to practise them on if you wish.  Focus on getting the letters the correct height and shape.  Use the lines to help you.  Shorter letters like a,c,e,s,w,o are kept between the blue lines.  Tall letters like b,d,h,t,l reach up to the top read line and descenders such as g, y, j, p touch the lower read line.

Handwriting paper

Relax and enjoy this story.

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy

This afternoon is our Art and PSHE afternoon.

For art, I’m going to set you a challenge!

Watch this this story.

I want you to imagine you are in the rainforest.  Can you draw a pencil picture of the rainforest but…and here’s the challenge…can you do it without taking your pencil off the page at all!

Watch this video.

For your PSHE I would like you to have a discussion with an adult, when they aren’t working. I would like you to talk about what you are responsible for.  Perhaps keeping your bedroom tidy, feeding a pet, tidying your toys up after you have played with them.  Then I’d like you to find out from the grown up what they are responsible for. Who has more responsibility and why?  Could you be responsible for something extra tomorrow – sorting the washing or tidying the sitting room?

Have a lovely day everyone,

Let me know how you are doing.

Love from Mrs Pope.

Monday 18th January

Good morning everyone, I hope you all have had a lovely weekend.

This week in maths we are going to be learning about 3D shapes.  3D is short for 3 dimensional, it means you can pick it up.  If something is 2D or 2 dimensional it is like a drawing, you can’t hold it in your hands.

Here is a shape mat to help you.  It shows you the 3D shape and gives you its name.  You might want to have it nearby to help you with the PowerPoint.

3D shape mat

Have a look at this PowerPoint.

Name the 3D shape

Remember, that vocabulary of face, vertices and edge are really important.

If we were in school,  we would have the big box of 3D shapes out so you would be able to see them and hold them. You would be able to point out the vertices, edges and faces and count them.  Today I would like you to make a 3D shape collection.  You could do a search around your house,  can you find and cylinders, spheres, cuboids, cubes or square based pyramids?  If you can’t find all of the shapes, here is a selection you can print and make so that we all have the shapes with us for our work this week.

3D shape nets

Once you have your shape collection, have a look at each shape and find the faces, vertices and edges.  You don’t need to write anything down but I would like you to be familiar with the vocabulary.

Today, in English, we are going on a visit. You won’t need a packed lunch and you definitely won’t need a warm coat although, you may wish to bring an umbrella!!

See if you can guess from this video.  You only need to watch the first 1 minute and 10 seconds.

Yep, you’ve guessed it, we are going to finding out all about rainforests and their amazing creatures for our English.  This week we are going to be writing information texts all about what we find out.

Have a look at this PowerPoint.

Monday PowerPoint

And here is your sheet.

Monday sheet

Today I would like you to create a glossary from the text in the PowerPoint.  Choose 5 words, order them alphabetically and then explain them.  You may wish to use a dictionary to find out what they mean or perhaps an internet search.  If you choose to do an internet search, make sure you put ‘for kids’ after you type in the word.

If you have a little time, have a look at this.

Please can you choose a reading comprehension suitable for you and have a read then answer the questions. Comprehension 3 is the most tricky.

Please can you practise your spellings.
