Dear Parents/Carers,
Home Learning
You will be aware that many people are being impacted by the need to self-isolate due to Coronavirus symptoms or waiting for test. With this in mind, we are setting out our home learning offer so that parents understand what to expect in different scenarios.
When will we provide Home Learning?
- If there is a local lockdown and schools are required by Public Health England to close to children of non-key workers.
- If class bubbles have to isolate at home (between 10 and 14 days) as required by Test and Trace.
- If individual pupils have to isolate due to household isolation as required by Test and Trace (between 10 and 14 days) but they are not, themselves, experiencing symptoms.
Please note that Home Learning will not be provided for pupils who are absent from school due to other illnesses or reasons other than Covid-19, as it will be assumed that they would be unable to complete any set work. Children who are unwell with Covid-19 symptoms are not expected to complete remote learning tasks.
How to access Home Learning?
In the event of a bubble shut down pupils will have access to home learning via the school website. Alternatively, staff may email you directly with home learning suggestions. Children in UKS2 may also access their learning via Google Classroom if lockdown impacted a whole bubble or large group of children.
If an individual child is required to self-isolate, they may receive their tasks via individual email to a parent or to the child (UKS2).
What should you do if your child does not have access to a device which can access the internet?
Please contact your child’s class teacher and let them know if you will find it hard to access online learning. Class teachers will make every effort to provide hard copies of work set e.g. a maths text book, printed off worksheets to accompany tasks.
What will be offered?
We will set work which corresponds with and continues the curriculum work we are doing in school. Staff will provide an activity that corresponds to each lesson that would be taught in class for each day.
However, the way in which Home Learning is delivered and the activities set will have to be adapted, depending on the scenario (see below):
Scenario 1 – Local Lockdown with school closures
The full Home Learning offer will apply with an activity provided for each lesson that would have taken place each day during the week. Work set will be uploaded to the website every evening in preparation for the day ahead.
Scenario 2 – Class ‘bubble’ isolation Home Learning would be delivered in exactly the same way as Scenario 1.
Scenario 3 – Individual isolation (e.g. one pupil is required to self-isolate due to Covid-19 advice). In this scenario, the class teacher would be working full-time in school, teaching the rest of the class. Therefore, Home Learning would be delivered in a slightly different way. Teachers will share work at the end of each school day for the individual/s isolating to complete the next day. An activity per lesson that was missed during the day will be provided.
Scenario 4 – Class teacher is ill. If the class teacher becomes unwell, and the school cannot get supply cover, pupils who are home learning will be directed to online curriculum resources with guidance for work to complete at home. Guidance about where to find these resources will be shared on the class information page of the school website. This page will be updated at least termly.
How should pupils record their work?
In scenario 1 and 2, pupils may be given a ‘Home Learning’ workbook to record the work that they complete during their absence period. Some work may be completed online, for example, in the case of children using Google Classroom. In the event of self-isolation, children can complete work at home in whatever way they choose. Parents are encouraged to contact school to request help if they need an exercise book or paper to help them complete tasks. Much work can be completed online.
How will we track pupil’s progress during Home Learning periods?
Teachers will respond to work emailed to them and provide opportunities for children working at home to demonstrate their learning e.g. through quizzes or summarising tasks. The way we manage this will reflect the age of the pupils:
YR (Room 4) will continue to use Tapestry to share information about children’s progress.
Y1, 2, 3 & 4 will provide assessment tasks on a Friday which will relate to the week’s learning objectives. Parents will be asked to email a photograph of their child’s answers or evidence of the completed tasks so that teachers can monitor children’s learning.
Y5 & 6 will provide weekly quizzes to check learning. These may be delivered as a Google Form and shared on Google Classroom or as a downloadable quiz.
How will teachers support Learning at home?
The level of support for home learners will depend on which scenario (see above) we are in. In Scenario 1 or 2, the class teacher will plan, deliver and monitor work using a range of strategies. Parents will be encouraged to email class teachers to share information about their child’s learning and class teachers will check in with all their pupils each week via a virtual meeting, email or telephone conversation.
In Scenario 3 (individual isolation) class teachers will contact the absent pupil via email or telephone conversation if their absence continues beyond 3 days. Parents are encouraged to email their child’s class teacher if there is any additional support that they would welcome.
In Scenario 4 (class teacher is ill) support may be provided by a supply teacher (if one is available) or by another member of the school staff. In this scenario, Mr Langford will share information about who to contact via the school website.
