Tuesday morning 12.5.20

Hi everyone. Here are the activities for Tuesday morning:

8.45 – 9.00: Practise spellings

9.00 – 9.05: Wake Up Shake Up Hot Potato

9.05 – 10.00: Maths

This morning we are using what we know about doubles to take ‘shortcuts’ to solve addition number sentences. If we know that 2+2 is 4, then we can use that to work out 2+3 as it is going to be 1 more. We have covered this before at school, so hopefully children are familiar with this concept. Taking my example, this is what the steps look like to writing out and solving the addition:

Starting ‘near double’ number sentence: 2+3

Break it down into the double plus 1 (in this case): 2+2+1

Solve the double, add on the 1: 4+1

The answer: 5

You’ll see that this is the format that is used on the sheet. Just be careful as some of the number sentences involve ‘near doubles’ that are not necessarily only 1 more. near doubles

If this sheet proves to be a bit tricky, then I have found this easier version. You will only need page 3 of this (there are three differentiated versions in the file). Try to write out the number sentences as shown above if you are doing this sheet so you can see how the doubles fact helps. near doubles easier

10.00 – 10.15: Break

10.15 – 11.00: English

Watch parts 3 and 4 of Jack and the Beanstalk. Discuss what has happened in these episodes. Was this what you predicted would happen when you were thinking about the story yesterday? How does Jack feel now? Do you think he should sell Daisy for the beans? Why or why not? Should Jack believe what the old man is telling him? Look at the sentences on the sheet and work out which of them are questions and which are statements. Add the correct punctuation to each of the sentences – either a question mark or a full stop. Then write at least two more questions that Jack could ask the old man to find out more about him or about the beans: questions for the old man

If you want to do extra work, you could make a comic strip of the market scene in part 3 and use speech bubbles to show the characters talking to each other.

11.00 – 11.15: Phonics

Complete the SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) mats. Remember that these are six page files (3 differentiated sheets and 3 answer sheets). Most children should be completing page 5 which is the hardest of the activities, particularly if they have close adult help available. Mat 4 (1) Mat 3 (1)

11.15 – 11.30: Break

11.30 – 11.40: Mindfulness https://cosmickids.com/category/watch/?video_category=mindfulness&changed=video_category

11.40 – 12.25: Music

For the next few weeks, we are going to use fairy tales and stories as inspiration for making music. Start with a warm-up with Little Red Riding Hood: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/music-ks1-little-red-riding-hood-vocal-warm-up/zhxg382

Then have a go at learning the song, ‘I Love Red’. The video discusses long and short notes, fast and slow notes and also rhythm. Have fun doing the actions too. If you scroll down, you will see you can print off lyrics for the song if you want to. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/music-ks1-little-red-riding-hood-song1/z74txyc

Enjoy the morning, everyone. x
